Program leaders are conducting operational testing of the Knifefish—during which military users will test the unmanned system under “realistic conditions”—during the current quarter of this fiscal year. The system faces an initial production decision in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2017 and a full-rate production decision one year after that.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) earlier raised concerns over the presence of knife fish in Laguna Lake.
The knife fish, an ornamental but carnivorous species, feeds on native fish in the lake, leading to a decline in the catch of tilapia and bangus (milkfish).
The Notopteridae or Featherback Family includes four genera; , and, and six species distributed throughout Southeast Asia and Africa. The fish of this family are similar in body shape to other Knifefish, except the anal and caudal fins are merged together to form a large fin.
